BRANDS WE LOVE: Lance Pierres

The intentionally minimalist accessories collection is reimagining mindful design and small-batch production – one bag at a time.

We met the duo at their Downtown Los Angeles studio to get an insider look at their sustainable approach to accessories.

HOW IT STARTED
Co-founders Kibwe Chase-Marshall and Joseph Roh first crossed paths in 2015. Kibwe was a seasoned designer, and Joseph an expert pattern maker. Over the years, they developed an effortless working relationship. Then, in 2020, the world got a taste of just how many products are produced internationally. As shipping delays dragged on for the next year, they knew there was a better way.

HOW IT'S MADE
Most Lance Pierres handbags start with a single, asymmetrically-placed seam. This signature detail challenges traditional construction methods to create the least amount of cutting waste. Take the Midiprism 01 Day Tote in our exclusive forest green, for example. There's almost no hardware, and the crossbody strap is adjustable via a knot rather than a buckle. The leather's raw edges are intentionally left visible, so there's no need for additional trim. "All that excessive construction has been removed," notes Kibwe.

KEEPING IT LOCAL
The brand's name is a French idiom for slingshot and was chosen as a symbol of the partner's far-flung goals. But they keep their business close to home, working and producing locally in Los Angeles. This practice keeps their carbon footprint small and allows Kibwe to nurture his relationships with manufacturers – which is essential for a small business like theirs.
